ATD San Diego often has board positions open for members looking for opportunities to use and enhance their leadership experience and skills. Requirements:All board positions are one-year terms, except for President-Elect, which is a three-year commitment (President-Elect, President, and Past President). To be eligible, members in good standing must have served a minimum of six months in a volunteer capacity in this chapter or have relevant work/volunteer experience. Applicants must be current ATD members and commit to becoming an ATD National Member upon selection. Board members must attend at least eight chapter events annually and at least nine board meetings annually.
Board Position Descriptions
Role Overview:
The President-Elect plays a critical leadership role in supporting the President, preparing to assume the presidency, and ensuring strong succession planning for the chapter. This role requires strong communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills to guide chapter operations, lead special projects, and foster collaboration. The President-Elect automatically succeeds to President at the conclusion of their term.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative Duties: Oversee the chapter’s annual CARE reporting requirements, serve as the primary point of contact for ATD National on all CARE-related communications, and prepare and submit the yearly CARE report to NAC. Partner with the Office Manager and Director of Finance to monitor financial health, review budget reports, and ensure responsible use of chapter resources.
Support of the President: Step in to fulfill presidential duties when the President is absent at board or chapter meetings. Assist with chapter organization, clarify board and committee responsibilities, and help lead the implementation of strategic initiatives.
Team Leadership & Succession Planning: Build strong relationships with ATD affiliates, chapter members, sponsors, and external partners. Lead succession planning efforts by recruiting, preparing, and mentoring future board members, ensuring continuity of leadership for the chapter.
Role Overview
As the chapter’s Secretary, you will use strong organizational and communication skills to provide administrative support for the chapter, ensure the accurate retention and communication of chapter proceedings and records, and distribute them to members through the website.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Support: Ensure that accurate minutes are taken and maintained as legal records of chapter board meetings, and make them accessible to members through the website. Collaborate with the President to create agendas for board meetings and strategic planning sessions.
Onboarding: Assist in recruiting and training incoming board members. Ensure all relevant training and reference documents are posted on the board member workspace for future use. Collaborate with the Director of Technology to confirm new board members have access to board accounts.
Project Management: Support board members by tracking projects to ensure timely completion and alignment with membership engagement goals. Collaborate with the Office Manager to ensure business operation documents (insurance, taxes, continuing education credits, etc.) are up to date. Oversee and coordinate any requirements related to the Corporation Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation.
Role Overview
As the Director of Finance, you will use strong communication, business ethics, honesty, and integrity to ensure the chapter is financially sound. Your role is to make competent financial recommendations, as well as maintain and promote continuity of the Chapter’s financial records.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight: Set annual financial goals, prepare the chapter budget, interpret and explain financial statements, review chapter contracts, accounts, and investments while providing suggestions on changes when necessary.
Administrative Duties: Establish and maintain accurate records of income and disbursements, maintain tax-exempt and non-profit status, prepare tax documents, prepare and present monthly financial statements at board meetings, distribute monthly analysis and year-to-date totals for each board position.
Collaboration: Work closely with the Office Manager and other board members to plan the budget, ensure bills are paid, and discuss budgetary needs in a timely manner.
Role Overview
As the Director of Technology, you will be responsible for identifying, implementing, and maintaining the chapter’s website content, features, and other technologies that support the chapter’s goals. Using current technology trends, you will provide innovative and creative solutions to engage members and enhance their overall experience with the chapter.
Key Responsibilities
Support Operations: Refresh and maintain the chapter’s website, manage the chapter’s Zoom account for webinars, meetings, and virtual events, and oversee Google accounts to ensure smooth transfer of access for incoming board members.
Implement Innovation: Research, develop, and introduce new ideas for leveraging technology to deliver enhanced services, improve operations, and create a vibrant, engaging member experience.
Collaboration: Partner with other board members to promote programs, highlight engagement opportunities, and showcase the value of chapter membership.
Role Overview
As the Director of Digital Experience, you will be the driving force behind the chapter’s online presence and digital engagement. You will oversee all aspects of the chapter’s digital footprint, including marketing, social media, content creation, website design, and event promotion. Your mission is to create a cohesive, compelling digital journey that aligns with the chapter’s vision and objectives.

Digital Strategy: Develop and execute comprehensive digital marketing strategies to enhance brand visibility, member engagement, and conversion rates.
Web Mastery: Lead the design, maintenance, and optimization of the chapter’s website to provide a seamless, user-friendly experience that supports business goals.
Content Excellence: Drive the creation of engaging, shareable content across digital platforms to support the member journey and strengthen chapter resonance.
Role Overview
As the Director of Membership Engagement and Growth, you will be at the forefront of our chapter’s efforts to build a vibrant and thriving community of members. Your role is pivotal in cultivating strong relationships, enhancing member experiences, and driving growth through engagement initiatives. You will work collaboratively to retain existing members while strategically expanding our membership base.
Key Responsibilities
Member Engagement: Develop and implement strategies to actively engage and connect with our current members, ensuring they feel valued, involved, and part of a dynamic community.
Retention Strategies: Design and execute programs and initiatives to increase member retention rates, reduce churn, and promote long-term commitment.
Growth Initiatives: Identify and pursue opportunities to expand our membership base, targeting new audiences and demographics.
Data-Driven Insights: Utilize data and analytics to assess membership trends, track engagement metrics, and make informed decisions to guide growth strategies.
Role Overview
As the Director of Volunteer Experience and Engagement, you will be the driving force behind building and maintaining a dynamic team of volunteers who play a crucial role in advancing the mission of our chapter. Your responsibilities will extend to recruiting, training, and managing volunteers with varying duties under different directors. Your ultimate goal is to ensure that our volunteers have a meaningful and rewarding experience while contributing to our chapter's success.
Key Responsibilities
Recruitment and Onboarding: Develop and implement strategies for recruiting volunteers across different board functions and roles, aligning their skills and interests with the chapter's needs.
Volunteer Training: Coordinate with department directors to provide comprehensive training to volunteers, ensuring they are well-prepared to fulfill their roles effectively.
Engagement and Retention: Foster a culture of appreciation and recognition, implementing programs to keep volunteers engaged, motivated, and committed to the mission and values of the chapter.
Performance Tracking: Collaborate with other Directors to track volunteer performance and contributions, utilizing data and feedback to continuously enhance the volunteer experience.
Role Overview
As the Director of Social Events, you will create meaningful opportunities for members to connect, network, and build community outside of formal learning programs. This role focuses on designing and delivering social gatherings that strengthen chapter culture, deepen member relationships, and showcase the fun, welcoming side of ATD San Diego.
Key Responsibilities
Event Design: Plan and coordinate chapter social activities such as mixers, networking events, and the annual holiday party.
Execution: Oversee logistics (venue, registration, catering, onsite support) to ensure a smooth and enjoyable member experience.
Member Engagement: Foster an inclusive, welcoming environment at every event where members feel connected and valued.
Collaboration: Partner with the Director of Learning Events, Director of Membership Engagement, and other board members to align social events with chapter strategy and membership goals.
Evaluation: Gather feedback and assess participation to continuously improve events and identify new opportunities for member connection.
Role Overview
As the Director of Learning Events, you will drive the chapter’s mission by leading the design and delivery of educational programs, workshops, and special learning initiatives. This role ensures members receive high-value, practical, and innovative learning opportunities that support their professional development in talent development.
Key Responsibilities
Program Development: Strategically plan and design learning events that align with chapter goals, ATD’s Talent Development Capability Model, and the needs of our membership.
Execution: Manage the logistics and delivery of workshops, speaker events, and professional development sessions from concept to completion.
Content Quality: Partner with subject matter experts and facilitators to deliver engaging, relevant, and actionable content.
Volunteer Leadership: Recruit and lead volunteers to support program delivery, ensuring smooth operations and a collaborative environment.
Collaboration: Partner with the Director of Marketing and the Director of Technology to ensure that all learning events are calendared and communicated.
Evaluation: Track attendance, collect participant feedback, and analyze results to measure impact and continuously improve program offerings.
Role Overview
As the Director of Mentorship, you will lead the chapter’s efforts to connect members with meaningful professional development opportunities through mentoring relationships. This includes designing and running the Mentor–Protégé Program, as well as creating intentional opportunities for members to connect at events. Your goal is to ensure mentorship becomes a year-round value of ATD San Diego.
Key Responsibilities
Mentor–Protégé Program: Design, launch, and manage the annual Mentor–Protégé Program, including recruiting, matching, and supporting mentors and protégés.
Event Connections: Facilitate intentional networking at events by pre-matching members with shared interests, roles, or goals to foster purposeful connections.
Community Building: Create touchpoints beyond the formal program (alumni mixers, spotlight stories, panel discussions) to keep mentorship visible year-round.
Member Support: Provide resources, toolkits, and best practices to encourage ongoing self-driven mentorship opportunities within the chapter.
Collaboration: Work with other Directors (Learning Events, Social Events, Membership) to weave mentorship into chapter activities and highlight it as a core benefit of membership.
Role Overview
As the Director of Sponsorship & Partnerships, you will drive the chapter’s external relationships and funding efforts. This includes securing sponsorships to support events and programs, as well as developing strategic partnerships with other ATD chapters and like-minded organizations. Your work ensures ATD San Diego has the resources, visibility, and collaborative reach to thrive.
Key Responsibilities
Sponsorship Development: Identify, approach, and secure corporate sponsors to financially support chapter initiatives such as learning programs, social events, and mentorship.
Partnership Building: Establish and nurture partnerships with other ATD chapters and professional associations to expand opportunities for members and increase chapter visibility.
Recognition & Deliverables: Ensure sponsor visibility and benefits are consistently delivered (logos on materials, recognition at events, digital promotion).
Revenue Growth: Create sponsorship packages and opportunities at different levels (e.g., event-based, annual partnerships) to drive sustained revenue.
Collaboration: Partner with Directors of Learning Events, Social Events, Digital Experience, and Mentorship to integrate sponsors/partners into chapter activities in meaningful ways.
Evaluation: Track sponsorship outcomes and provide reports to the board to demonstrate value and strengthen long-term relationships.
