About the OD SIG:

OD SIG gatherings are informal group discussions led by a senior-level OD practitioner. The discussion leader shares stories and insights about their experiences, their backgrounds, how they got started and advanced within the discipline. Discussions are highly interactive and attendees are encouraged to ask questions.

July Discussion Leader:

Alan Landers, First Step OD & Training

Applying OD Principles in managing a cross-cultural business.

Alan is facilitating an interactive case study and group discussion. Participants will be formed into consulting teams and presented with factual information about FirstStep Communications, a call center serving the US mortgage industry. Each team is charged with recommending actions for one of the following topics: 1) improving leadership, 2) increasing productivity, or 3) engendering employee engagement. A spokesperson for each group will present their team’s solutions to the whole group. After the presentations, Alan will facilitate a discussion explaining what he did and is doing with a rationale for those actions.

Alan is the President of FirstStep OD & Training and CEO of FirstStep Communications, LLC. He’s been practicing OD since 1978 when he first started with the City of San Diego’s OD&T Department. Alan has consulted with FORTUNE 500s including General Motors, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, HJ Heinz, Texas Instruments, Federal, State, and Local government organizations, nonprofits, universities, hospitals, and many others across the U.S. and abroad. Internally, he has held VP positions in the areas of Training, Performance Management, and Talent Management. He has developed executive leadership programs, created online corporate universities, designed and conducted leadership assessment centers, designed and implemented large-scale productivity improvement, processes improvement, and change management programs. Alan’s specialties are startup and turnaround interventions as well as implementing accountability systems
